Importance of water to prey capture in Nepenthes

    Congratulations on growing these beauties, especially as a resident! Amazing video, and amazing how you can grow all these genera in the same terrarium! I was wondering though -- what are your temperature and humidity parameters in your room throughout the year? Is it constantly around 70 degrees (F), or does the temperature vary throughout the year? And what are you doing to keep Heliamphora, Drosophyllum, Roridula, and Darlingtonia alive? Congratulations -- it's quite the accomplishment!!

  • @aureliusfeynman485
    @aureliusfeynman485 2 месяца назад

    Interesting talk, but I think 3 points should be adressed or stressed further. First, a steady disinfection program is essential to longterm success of using standing water or recirculated for irrigation. Zoomycetes can thrive in these systems and capillary mats can (and will eventually) be covered in algae without proper measures taken. So the use of a disinfectant like Zerotol or a homemade solution of hydrogen peroxide should be applied every 2 weeks ideally, on the mat and in the water reservoirs, to curb the development of these organisms. Second point, in moments of high water demand (e.g. summer heat waves), capillary action can be insufficient at maintaining the water column in the media, so you can run into a "bottle neck" in the water supply to the roots. This of course depends on many factors, like the size and type of pot used, root system development, size of aerial parts of the plant, etc. But it should be stressed that young and recently potted plants are at higher risk, as well as plants potted in taller pots or net pots. In these circumstances, it's advisable to provide top watering at least weekly and up to once a day depending on conditions, to prevent issues. Thirdly, for those who apply fertilizers of any form to the media, salts of these fertilizers will accumulate over time in the top 1/3 of the media, due to the salts migrating upwards in the water column and then accumulating due to the evaporation/consumption of water in this layer. Again, periodic top watering with "softer" water will leach these salts before they accumulate to a toxic level. Don't use pure distilled water for watering, some EC is needed as otherwise there will be osmotic stress to the roots.

    Great video, very Informative! 🙂 In your opinion, what would be the general care routine for smaller baby Cephalotus until they reach the size that you have, apart from light and watering, at that stage the pitchers are tiny to be be fertilized.

    • @pinecone.jeff.carnivores
      @pinecone.jeff.carnivores 2 месяца назад

      Well, my UC Davis came as a tiny, 2 pitcher leaf pulling and I experimented with it's care quite a bit. At first, I had it growing with my Drosera under some gooseneck LED lights in my living room. It seemed to be doing well but in hindsight, I think I was watering it too much. I had a bad moss growth problem, which clued me in about the water. But I didn't know that at the time. Then I put it in my Ikea grow cabinet with high humidity and it really didn't like that. Of the few new pitchers it grew, I lost 2 of them in a matter of weeks. So that's when I decided to put them on a heating mat on top of my computer and that's when I started noticing the lid drooping when it was thirsty. Once I realized what it needed in terms of watering, it got easy to care for these wonderful plants! So, if I had a small, young Ceph, I would make sure to watch it's watering needs first and foremost. And with a small pot, I would not put it directly on the heat mat. I think it would dry up the pot too fast. I would raise it a bit with an upside down drain saucer. The ambient temp around the mat should be sufficient for the little pot, though I haven't tried that yet. Its what I've been thinking about doing with some leaf pullings I'm planning on doing. I hope this answers your question. Please reach out if you have more questions.

On the contrary I'm from a tropical country soaring above 40C degrees currently so they are in an airconditioned room. As you've mentioned, I'm only focusing on watering.
